Automated, Efficient, Consistent: GEBHARDT Optimises Cold Chain Logistics at Ospelt Food

Ospelt Food AG has invested in a fully automated solution to modernise its logistics processes while consistently maintaining the cold chain. In collaboration with the GEBHARDT Intralogistics Group, a customised system was developed to automate internal material flows, reduce manual labour, and significantly increase operational efficiency.

Sinsheim - June 23, 2025 - At Ospelt Food's Swiss production site in Sargans, the internal transport of chilled food previously relied on time-consuming manual processes. Specifically, pallets were moved to the refrigerated warehouse using an outdated elevator, resulting in time losses, high personnel costs, and potential risks to product quality. The introduction of a new automation solution has transformed this process.

Integrated Solution with a Focus on Continuity and Control

The core of the new system features a vertical conveyor with four levels. This, combined with modern pallet conveyor technology and the GEBHARDT KARIS® automated guided vehicle system, ensures a smooth and uninterrupted material flow. The system can transport up to 60 pallets per hour at a consistent speed, maintaining seamless temperature control from the production area to the delivery zone. Full integration with the existing ERP system and other IT interfaces enables continuous monitoring and documentation of the cold chain. The system was specifically tailored to the site's structural conditions and designed to fit seamlessly into existing processes.

Increased Efficiency and Less Stress

Switching to automated transportation has provided significant benefits for Ospelt Food. The number of manual interventions has drastically decreased, the traceability of goods has improved, and material throughput has increased concurrently. The new solution eases the physical strain on employees, creates ergonomic working conditions, and frees up resources for more value-adding activities.

Sustainable Logistics as a Success Factor

The collaboration between Ospelt Food and GEBHARDT demonstrates how companies in the food industry can meet regulatory requirements with strategic investments in automation and secure competitive advantages. This new solution exemplifies modern, digital intralogistics in sensitive production environments and lays the foundation for further growth and process reliability.
